Buckets Full Lyrics

I found an old well with no pennies in it
it had no wishes inside
it cried im full of water but im running empty
my bucket's heavy but its dry

why cant this mechanism draw a heart up to the surface
why cant it raise my spirits too
what if the crank could say well thank you but im done today
what if the rope could say i'm through
what if the bucket goes just north of where the water flows
and ohh i've got a question for you

where can you find your hopes and dreams at
i hear they hide just on the far side of the sky
waiting for the rain to pick them up and drop them to us
waiting for the wind to whisper low
so you go and draw them to you
they almost always end up empty in your eyes
but that dont mean theres no such thing
as having hopes and dreams
cause you can bring them by the buckets full you know

I met an acorn tree who swore he knew what truth was
I found out later he lied
Then he grew teary eyed and shook as if the earth did
his acorn tears fell as he cried

sometimes i wonder why my arms are stretched out to the sky
to catch the birds when they dont want to fly
and why the sun would shine on me and why summer blew its breeze
across these knots
i live through centuries and find perplexing mysteries
my mind has wrestled with these thoughts

i figure you're just like a hurricane contained
cause calm is written in your eyes
and as the artist drew he likely penned the adage too
that life aint fair
and if the west wind blew as often as i thought of you
you'd find a few tornados out there
